Beneath the Blue: Private Whale Shark Experience
A day at sea in search of the whale shark is one of the most unforgettable ways to connect with the magic of the Mexican Caribbean. Perfect for travelers seeking awe, nature, and a once in a lifetime adventure.
Every summer, the waters north of the Yucatán Peninsula become one of the best places in the world to encounter the whale shark, the ocean’s largest, but gentlest, fish.
Information
Impact Description
This private experience takes you far and into the open sea, guided by local experts who ensure a safe and respectful encounter with the whale sharks.
While this is a popular activity and other boats will be present, we depart early to stay ahead of the rush.
One key advantage of a private tour is that you'll have more opportunities to enter the water, unlike shared tours, where participants are usually limited. After the encounter, we'll head on to Isla Mujeres’ Playa Norte, to enjoy fresh ceviche, and soak in the beauty of the Caribbean.
Recommendations
To help protect the marine ecosystem and the whale sharks themselves, sunscreen use is strictly regulated during the experience.
We recommend using a reef-safe, water-resistant sunscreen and applying it before leaving your hotel. Once you reach the port, applying sunscreen is no longer allowed.
Even better, we highly recommend wearing a long-sleeve UV shirt and a cap for natural sun protection. It's the most effective and eco-friendly way to stay safe under the sun while respecting the ocean and its wildlife.
Restrictions List
- Do not touch, chase, or attempt to ride the whale sharks.
- Keep a minimum distance of 2 meters (6 feet) at all times.
- Always follow the instructions of your guide.
- No Alcohol or drugs before or during the tour.
- Loose plastics, speakers, or anything that may disturb the marine environment.
Restrictions
This experience is suitable for participants 8 years and older, as long as they are confident swimmers. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times during the tour.
Due to the nature of this activity, it is not recommended for people with heart, respiratory or back conditions, or for pregnant women. Participants must be comfortable swimming in open water, sometimes under moderate sea conditions.
To ensure an intimate and safe experience, the number of guests per tour is limited. Only two swimmers and one guide are allowed in the water at a time during the whale shark encounter.
